I enjoyed the session with Emily and Jan because we got to learn a lot about seabirds.  First, we looked at different types of seabirds and said if we recognised any of them. Next, we did two activities, one was guessing where different birds would live in the cliff and the other was learning about rat traps where there was chocolate flavoured work.  I really liked meeting Ruth and Reid the rat detecting dog because he was so fast and energetic which makes him grest at sniffing out which box had something in it  in a short amount of time.  Some people reid at finding the right box.  Reid is important because rats eat seabird eggs and he tells people where the rats are.  Eilidh P7

When Reid the rat detecting dog came I liked watching him finding the teddy in the box.   learnt that rats can eat the birds eggs and the chicks inside.  I also liked playing the game when you have to put the birds in the right place.  Nolan P4

Before Reid came in we were learning about seabirds, we were learning about what attracts rats.  There were birds living inside a box.  We saw were the seabirds live on Staffa. Then Reid came in and we saw how good Reids senses are.

We started racing him, I raced him first but I lost, then Oak tried but he couldn’t beat him, then Ross tried and he beat him. Tommy P5

I was racing Reid the dog, I had to try and find a oy in a box, before he found the rat smell, this was my favourite part.

I learnt about different seabirds. I like gulls and puffins.  Oak P1

I enjoyed learning about how they see if there’s mice on Lunga by putting a mixture of wax and chocolate into a box and if there’s bite marks they will know if there are mice.  Emily and Jan also told us about all the seabirds we get on Mull.  Ruth brought Reid the rat detecting dog and outside I raced him searching for a toy and I beat him.  Reid is very energetic and has a very good sense of smell.  Ross P7

I learnt that rats can eat the seabird egg.  We heard the names of different seabirds and played a game about where they live.

I liked seeing Reid the dog work.  I learnt that he goes onto boats to make sure there are no rats sneaking into the cargo.

My favourite part was seeing how happy  Reid is working.  Mairi P2

When Reid the rat detecting dog came I loved seeing what he did everyday and for a living.  I learned that rats eat seabirds eggs and chicks.  Corynn P4

When Reid the dog came first we had a chat about what  Reid and Emily do and then we put cut outs of birds in the right nests and looked at mouse bites in wax mixed with cocoa powder.  Then we saw Reid get to work.  Blue P5

When the ranger visit came, Emily told us about how they mix wax and chocolate and put it in a tunnel and check for different bite marks.  WE also learnt how to tell the bite marks apart. We then did a game were we had to guess where all of the birds nested.  We then went to see Reid and his handler Ruth told us that it’s important to make sure rats are not on Lunga or Staffa so they don’t dig up the nest and eat the eggs and they also check boats going to the islands to make sure no rats get on board.  They then showed us how quick Reid can find the scent he was looking for.  Some people tried to race Reid and only Ross won.   Aoifa P7
